There is a Blue Supermoon This Week. Here’s How to See It

On August 30, 2023, we will witness a rare event – the blue supermoon. It is an astronomical phenomenon that occurs when the Earth’s natural satellite, the moon, appears larger and brighter in the sky than usual. What actually is a blue supermoon, though, and what makes it so special? Let’s find out.

What is a blue supermoon?

A blue supermoon is a combination of two lunar events – a full moon and a supermoon. A full moon occurs when the illuminated side of the moon faces us, and the sun, Earth, and moon are aligned. We have full moons once every 29.5 days, on average. (1)

A supermoon occurs when the moon is at its closest distance to Earth in a given orbit (known as perigee). This happens once every 13 months, on average, and it makes the moon appear larger and brighter than normal. Truthfully it is kind of an optical illusion, allowing the moon to appear 14% larger than usual to the human eye. When these two events happen at the same time, we get a blue supermoon.

Is it Actually Blue?

Although the name suggests that the moon will appear blue, it rarely does. The term ‘blue’ comes from a rare atmospheric phenomenon that occurs when smoke, dust, or ash particles in the atmosphere scatter blue light. However, when we see a blue moon, it is usually just a regular full moon that happens to be the second full moon in a month.

As you can imagine, a blue supermoon that is actually blue is quite rare. This is likely where the phrase “once in a blue moon” comes from. The phrase is meant to represent something that very rarely happens.

Why is it special?

A blue supermoon is a relatively rare event, occurring only once every two to three years. It is an awe-inspiring sight that captures the imagination of millions of people worldwide. In addition to its rarity, a blue supermoon has significant cultural and spiritual significance across the globe. Many cultures associate the moon with femininity, intuition, and emotional balance, making it an important symbol for many communities. (2)

Furthermore, the lunar cycle is said to have a significant impact on nature, including tides, fertility, and migration patterns. As such, a blue supermoon can have a great influence on nature and wildlife.

How to see the Blue Supermoon this Week

As the blue supermoon occurs on August 30th, it will be visible in different parts of the world at different times. Check your local lunar calendar to find out the precise time of the moonrise and moonset in your area. You can also use a stargazing app to track the moon’s movement and determine the best viewing time. (3)

To see this speical moon, find a spot with an unobstructed view of the sky, away from lights and pollution. You can also join an astronomy club or attend a stargazing event to learn more about the phenomenon from experts.
