An out-of-body experience is often described as a feeling of your consciousness leaving the body. People with a near-death experience commonly report this sensation. While it’s unclear how these situations occur, they are, for the most part, accidental. However, an out-of-body experience is similar to astral projection. But the key difference is that astral projection is a deliberate effort to travel in a spiritual plane. It’s a well-debated phenomenon that many people are curious about. [1] So one TikToker posted videos to teach how to leave your body and go “anywhere in the universe” you want.
Sydney Wilson has posted numerous videos about astral projection and how to do it. In one TikTok, she explained why she started this series. “So I’ve only seen a few TikToks on this and I don’t know why because there needs to be more. But we really need to talk about astral projection, because every person should know about this.”
How to Leave Your Body and Travel With Your Soul
Sydney offers a quick explanation of how it works. “It’s basically when your soul leaves your body, and you have an out-of-body experience. Anyone can do it; you just have to get yourself into a really relaxed state of mind and basically think about wanting to astral project.”
According to Sydney, the soul can go anywhere in the world — literally, not figuratively. “When I say anywhere, I mean absolutely anywhere… you just think about where you wanna go, and you’re instantly taken there. You can literally go to Mars.”
Here are her instructions on how to leave your body and explore the world. “First, you need to find a time where you will not be disturbed or interrupted. It makes no difference what time of day or night you choose. Just as long as you know, you won’t be interrupted.”
Additionally, she recommends you eat only light foods for the previous 24 hours, avoiding high-fat and high-protein foods. Also, use a couch or a reclining chair instead of a bed for the first few times to avoid falling asleep. Uncross your arms and legs. “When we sit down and relax, we normally start thinking about all the things we should be doing… all these things need to be put aside before you can successfully leave your body.”
Although you don’t forget astral trips as you forget dreams, it’s advised to keep a journal to document your thoughts and process. [2] For more details on how to leave your body and explore the world as a soul, check out Sydney’s video series.

Is Astral Projection Real?
Science has yet to prove if one’s consciousness could leave one’s physical body, but many reports of similar sensations date back centuries. The idea of astral projection has become rather commercialized with books, films, and seminars about the subject. It’s difficult to determine if these practices actually work because there’s no way to measure a soul leaving and re-entering a body.
One simple and common explanation for out-of-body type experiences is that they use their imagination to dream and fantasize. One way to test the validity of astral travel is to hide objects at different locations and ask a person to astral project there and describe what objects are there. If proven real, the astral projection could become invaluable to find people trapped during natural disasters or in crime scene investigations.
Although people who practice the art of having their soul leave their body insist on how real their experiences felt, their proof is all anecdotal. According to Susan Blackmore, researcher and author of Beyond the Body: An Investigation of Out-of-the-Body Experiences, individuals who experience astral travel “have been found to score higher on measures of hypnotizability and, in several surveys, on measures of absorption, [a] measure of a person’s ability to pay complete attention to something and to become immersed in it, even if it is not real, like a film, play, or imagined event.” [3]
For now, astral projection is harmless, entertaining, even life-changing, for those who engage in it.
How to Astral Project
For those who’d like to attempt it, Laura Brown, a “spiritual lifestylist” and founder of Intuitive Alchemy, warns that it takes some practice.
“I would suggest that newbies begin with guided meditations for astral travel which can be found for free on YouTube and such,” she says. “The best thing I can suggest is to be very calm and to let go of any attachment to the outcome. Don’t cling to this notion of ‘I have to astral travel’ because then you’re not relaxed — you’re holding on, which is the exact opposite of what you should be doing. And have fun with it!” [4]
