# Maths question stumps internet

There is a maths question making the rounds again, in fact, this particular problem has had people stumped for YEARS. But, how could a simple little math question cause so much drama? How difficult is it really? Well, as it turns out, this particular maths question actually has more than one answer. The question is, can you figure any of them out?

So, depending on which way you were taught math in high school, and, if you actually remember any of it, your answer will be different. Take a look at the math problem that’s been causing quite a stir! Whether you love or hate math, this problem is fun to try solve. don’t forget to share it with family and frriends and see how well they did! Remember, don’t cheat! That will just take all the fun out of it!

## What is 8÷2(2+2)?

So, depending on what you learned, you would have to use one of two methods to figure this maths question out. These two methods are known as PEMDAS or BODMAS. Which did you learn in school? Have a look at what Mike Breen, American Mathematical Society public awareness officer, had to say in The Sun about these two common methods. Generally, the USA uses PEDMAS, while Brittan and Australia prefer to use BODMAS.

“The way it’s written, it’s ambiguous. In math [sic], a lot of times there are ambiguities. Mathematicians try to make rules as precise as possible.”

So, if you are using the BODMAS method: Brackets, orders, division, multiplication, addition, subtraction. But, if you are using the PEMDAS method, you’d work it out like this: Calculate inside the brackets first, then multiply before dividing last.

## The answer to the maths question

Are you ready for it? What was your answer? If you came out with the answer 1 or 16, both would be correct!

Did you enjoy this math problem? If you did, you may like to give these a go, too! Less than 2% of people get this one right! Can you solve it?
