According to Zen master, Osho – The concept of being positive at all times is nothing but a bucket load of a burden on a human shoulder. It is impossible to be in a positive state of mind at all times. Not only it is escapism, but it is also running away from the real emotions.
It is true that thoughts and intentions do play a major role in our day to day lives, but what we are really talking about here is gradual progress and not forcing yourself to adopt an emotion and scarf it down your throat like a misery.
Osho believes it were people like Dale Carnegie, Napoleon Hill, and the Christian priest, Vincent Peale, who filled the entire American Continent and later the world, with their concept of positivity, which was nothing but escapism wrapped in a shiny packet.
Osho, in a candid chat session, talked about why positive thinking will not always help you out and stated, “The philosophy of positive thinking means being untruthful; it means being dishonest. It means seeing a certain thing and yet denying what you have seen; it means deceiving yourself and others.”
… Dale Carnegie started this whole school of positive philosophy, positive thinking: Don’t see the negative part, don’t see the darker side.
But by your not seeing it, do you think it disappears? You are just befooling yourself. You cannot change reality. The night will still be there; you can think that it is daytime for twenty-four hours, but by your thinking it, it is not going to be light twenty-four hours a day.
The negative is as much part of life as the positive. They balance each other.”
It is true that positive thinking is not a rocket science. Also, there is not denying the fact that it really does help you out in the time of crisis.
The point Osho is trying to make here is – he neither supports negativity, nor positivity. For him, a clear state of mind will be free of any extreme emotions. Per his thoughts about positive thinking, it is quite clear that he saw it a plague and not a boon.
What is Positivity?
Positivity is a state of mind where people are genuinely happy, without thinking much about the consequences. Nothing is forced and everything sails smoothly for them. Being positive also means, that when there is a situation that is negative, rather than running away from it, a truly positive individual will always embrace the challenges and will turn the tables around.
Positive thinking does not come packed in a carton box that you can open anytime and use it. We inculcate positive thoughts. We breed them. Positive or negative thinking is our own baby and no one else will experience as you do.
Osho simply states that being in a positive mind frame at all times is unhealthy because it not accepting the reality and running away from it. For him half-truth is dangerous and the reason why he does not contend for either negative or positive thought is because neither is whole in nature.
Positivity is simply being in a state of bliss when you have truly accepted and embraced life as it comes to you.
