Women Are Choosing To Marry Themselves, It’s Called ‘Sologamy’

Whether you are dating or fresh out of a relationship, it’s always a good idea to take stock of yourself and practice some self-love. But a new trend called “sologamy” might be taking things a bit too far.

Basically, there are single women out there who are literally marrying themselves, ceremony and all. It is a commitment to being single and loving yourself whether or not Mr. Right ever comes along.

Of course, this approach has many scratching their heads wondering if the big display is necessary. And is this declaration a forever kind of thing? What happens if a great guy does come along? Do you say, “Sorry, I’m married to myself” or do you promptly divorce yourself?

Apparently, there are folks who think this is a great idea. Someone has started a website called IMarriedMe.com which will help you plan the perfect wedding. The aim of a self-wedding, they say, is “about reconnecting and staying connected with you.” You can be single, dating, or even married.

In that respect, sologamy sounds like a pretty good idea, but do you need to turn loving yourself into an event witnessed by 300 of your closest friends and family? This movement of sorts seems to have some feminist undertones to it and might be embraced by driven career women who choose profession over family.

“I would describe it as women saying yes to themselves,” 37-year-old sologamist Erika Anderson said in a WUSA9 interview. “It means that we are enough, even if we are not partnered with someone else.”

All and all, the idea of loving yourself is a great one, but the whole ceremony thing is probably a bit too much. When you really honor who you are as a human, it shows in the way you act, look, and feel. You won’t have to invite anybody to a big shindig because your life is a daily celebration. So skip the big ceremony and just go do something good for yourself!
