As it gets closer and closer to Halloween, it’s time to start thinking about all the tasty treats you can use to celebrate the holiday. This brain cake might look creepy, but it tastes absolutely delicious.
All you need is a few basic ingredients, and you can have it made with less than an hour of work.
For the Cake:
1 pack of red velvet cake mix and all the ingredients you need to make it according to package instructions.
1 can of buttercream frosting
Ivory gel food coloring
1 pack of premade marshmallow fondant or one batch of the below recipe
1/2 tablespoons of water
16 ounces marshmallows (mini works better)
8 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
For the Blood:
1/4 cup strawberry jam
1 teaspoon water
1/4 cup honey
1/8 teaspoon black gel food coloring
1 teaspoon red gel food coloring
For the Icing:
If you don’t have store-bought fondant, start by making the fondant with this recipe. You will need to do it the night before because it has to refrigerate overnight to get the right consistency.
1. Microwave two of the tablespoons of water and the marshmallows for 30 seconds. Take it out, stir it, and repeat the microwaving process again until the marshmallows and the water are completely melted and mixed together.
2. Sift six cups of the powdered sugar onto the marshmallows and mix to combine.
3. Use the vegetable shortening to grease your hands and a workspace. Turn the sugar and marshmallow mix out onto the surface and knead the dough gently. Add in the remaining powdered sugar as you knead. If the fondant starts to tear, add remaining water in a half tablespoon at a time.
4. Knead for roughly eight minutes. The fondant will be done when it is a smooth, stretchy substance that you can pull without tearing.
5. Form the fondant into a ball and apply a thin layer of shortening to the fondant ball to keep it from drying out. Wrap it in plastic wrap, put it in a ziploc bag with the air squeezed out, and refrigerate overnight.
For the “blood”:
Combine all the ingredients for the fake blood and set it aside a few minutes before serving the cake.
For the Cake:
Now it’s time for the fun part of actually baking and assembling the cake.
1. Follow the cake box’s instructions to make the batter and preheat the oven. Pour the batter into a round or dome shaped cake pan that has been thoroughly greased.
2. Bake the cake until a toothpick comes out clean when you insert it into the pan.
3. Let the cake cook for ten minutes and then take it out of the pan and let it finish cooling entirely.
4. Trim away excess cake until the cake is in a rough brain shape.
5. Thinly coat the cake with the buttercream frosting and put it in the fridge until the frosting is set, about one hour.
6. While the frosting is setting, take your fondant out of the fridge, knead it until it is smooth and soft, and mix in the ivory food gel until you get a peachy tone.
7. Working with one small lump of frosting at a time, roll it into worm shapes about one centimeter in diameter and about a foot long.
8. Take the cake from the fridge and gently press the fondant rolls to the cake in tight squiggles. Be sure to cleanly divide the cake into a left and right side and do not let any of your squiggles pass over to the opposite hemisphere.
9. Refrigerate the cake until about ten minutes before serving.
10. Gently paint your fake blood over the cake until it is thoroughly coated.
