The Elder Futhark Rune Meanings And Their Astounding Accuracy


There are many versions of the runic alphabets. Each has variations in names, shapes, esoteric meanings and magical uses. One should not mix futharks, or the intent or meaning becomes confused. The Elder Futhark, the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, and the Younger (or Scandinavian) Futhark are the most frequently seen versions of the runic alphabets in use today.

These runes we are using today are Elder Futhark. Let’s look into the meaning of each one:

1. Fehu

Fehu Rune - Uses: invites wealth, fullfillment of goals

6. Laguz 

Laguz Rune - Uses: invites hope, symbol of the sustenance of life

Stands for: Water (or Lake)
Color: Black & White (Green)
Casting meaning: Laguz represents the power of water and its easy flowing nature. We must learn to “go with the flow” when this rune shows up in a reading so that we can take full advantage of our powers.

7. Algiz

15. Berkana 

Berkana Rune - Uses: invites romance, healing & purification

Stands for: Birch Tree (or Birch Twig)
Color: White (Blue)
Casting meaning: Like the birch tree coming to life from a seed planted in the earth, Berkana represents a new beginning and is also a powerful birth rune.

16. Jera 

Jera Rune - Uses: invites long term success, luck, good for gardeners

Sound: “j” like the “y” in “year”
Stands for: Harvest (or Year or Season)
Color: Brown
